What is IEC 60079

IEC 60079 is a series of international standards addressing the equipment and systems intended for use in explosive atmospheres. These standards is published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). "Explosive atmospheres" in this context refers to environments where gases, vapors, mist, or dusts mix with air in a way that can be ignited under certain operating conditions.

IEC 60079 Non-hazardous Area

Non-hazardous areas, by definition, are those areas where there is no risk of an explosive atmosphere. Therefore, the strict requirements and protection methods outlined in IEC 60079 are not directly applicable to non-hazardous areas.

However, it's worth noting that within a facility or location, the boundaries between hazardous and non-hazardous areas need to be clearly defined. This ensures that equipment intended for use in non-hazardous areas will be installed in hazardous area. Proper area classification is an essential step in the process of ensuring safety in environments that have the potential for explosive atmospheres.

Ambiguity of the Term Non-hazardous Area

IEC 60079 is concerned with the classification of areas where flammable gas or vapour or mist hazards may be present. The classification may be used as a basis to support the proper selection and installation of equipment for use in a hazardous area.

IEC 60079 is intended to be applied where there may be an ignition hazard due to the presence of flammable gas or vapour, mixed with air under normal atmospheric conditions.

An area classified non-hazardous, in accordance with this Standard, may not necessarily be safe in all respects as there may be toxic and chemical hazards present.

Hazardous Area Classification - NFPA

When it comes to hazardous locations, NFPA 70, the National Electrical Code (NEC), provides the criteria for classifying these areas based on the properties and quantities of flammable gases, vapors, dusts, and fibers/flyings that may be present. The goal is to ensure that the electrical and other types of equipment installed in these locations are designed and installed to prevent ignition.
