IEC 60865 Short-circuit currents – Calculation of effects

What is IEC 60865?

IEC 60865 pertains to standards set by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that address the effects of short-circuit currents in three-phase a.c. systems. The purpose of this standard is to provide guidance to determine the mechanical effects of short-circuit currents in power installations. The effects of short-circuit currents can be significant and might cause physical damage to equipment or infrastructure if not accounted for.

There are two parts to this standard:

IEC 60865-1 Definitions and calculation methods
This part provides guidelines and formulas to calculate the mechanical effects on equipment and structures due to short-circuit currents. In the event of a short circuit, the associated currents can exert significant forces on electrical equipment. Hence, it's crucial to calculate these forces and design systems to handle them, ensuring safety and reliability.
IEC 60865-2 Examples of Calculations
This part provides examples on the impacts of short-circuit currents, providing guidance on calculation and managing these effects.

What is the use of IEC 60865?

IEC 60865 can be used in design. Engineers and designers can use the criteria in this standard to ensure that installations are robust enough to handle the forces and torques generated by short-circuit currents. IEC 60865 can provide guidance which might affect decisions like:

  • Choice of materials
  • Physical design or layout
  • Anchoring or bracing of components
  • Clearance distances between parts

Relationship with IEC 60909

It's worth noting that IEC 60865 is related to other standards that deal with the electrical aspects of short-circuits, like IEC 60909. While IEC 60909 deals with the calculation of short-circuit currents, IEC 60865 focuses on the mechanical effects of those currents.

Mechanical Effects Of Short-circuit Currents In Open Air Substations

This brochure is a companion of the former one published in 1996 by CIGRE.

In 1992 CIGRE SC23 decided to restart the activity in short-circuit mechanical effects in open-air substations. This was due to the increase of knowledge in this field, especially in the field of the impact of dynamics forces on structural design. In fact electromagnetic forces induced large displacement and dynamic behaviour of cables and supports. IEC 60865 (part 1 and 2) was used to define maximum loads and minimum clearances which have to be taken into account as static load and distances for design.
